About a month ago we noticed a huge swarm of bees buzzing near our room. When we went investigate we saw a big hive connected to the vines snaking their way up the wall. We weren’t sure what kind of bees they were, so we figured we should tell someone. If they were some dangerous sort we wouldn’t want them attacking any children or old people. We shared our concern with a few staff, but it seemed all they could think about was the possibility of honey. We figured it was best left alone, and we soon stopped thinking about the bees.
About a week ago we were taking a walk with some of the children when they pointed up at a tree to show us some honey bee hives. Not really thinking I (Colton) said “Oh yeah, we have one of those by our room.” Without hesitation one of the boys replied “We will get honey, Anna.” I wasn’t so sure it was a good idea, so I came up with a few excuses as to why that day wouldn’t really work. I thought the issue would disappear.
I was wrong, of course, and the next day they were outside of our room ready to go. “Well, let me at least get my camera.” The equipment they had with them was as follows: a long stick, garden shears, a box of matches, and a pair of pants that B Naveen felt were worth sacrificing. They wrapped the pants around the end of the stick, lit them on fire, smoked the bees out, and plated the comb in a matter of minutes. Never doubt these kids when they say they know what they are doing.
It was the best honey ever.
Makes me think of Psalm 19,
Love you both. Can’t wait to see you.
Dad
